Minimum Requirements

  • A completed relevant Diploma and or Degree in Quantity Surveying / Construction Management (B.Sc / Btech / Ndip)
  • Minimum of 5 (five) years relevant experience in the civil construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor with proven track record in civil projects. (Roads, Bridges, Pipelines, structures etc.)
  • Relevant training and or qualifications in related fields (eg. Project management, programming, contract law, S.H.E. etc ) will be an advantage.
  • Experience in Buildsmart, CCS Candy, Microsoft Project and Primavera will be an advantage.
  • Registration with a relevant professional body, including as a Professional Construction Manager (Pr.CM) with the SACPCMP, or alternatively to be shortly eligible for such registration would be an advantage.
  • Valid Drivers licence.

Job Description

As a Quantity Surveyor your key deliverable will be ensure that all work done on site is measured, certified and paid correctly. To achieve this you will need to integrate your thorough understanding of the work being performed with how it is specified and measured in the contract. This together with the monthly reconciliation of ‘actual’ versus ‘allowable’ costs will be critical to you detecting and addressing, without delay, any variations to the contract that may affect costs and profitability on the contract.

Your duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following key aspects / competencies :

  • Planning and Program ;
    • assisting the Construction (Site) Manager with the realistic planning and programming of the contract by immediately on award performing a quantities take off to cross check and compare the billed versus tender drawings versus construction drawing quantities.
    • Regular review and update thereof with progress to date (work done) as well as any new drawings, site instructions and variation orders.
    • assisting the Construction (Site) Manager with timeously assessing the impact of any new drawings, site instructions and variation orders on the Approved Construction Program and Completion Date.
  • Contract Administration and Contract Management ;
    • providing a resource analysis of all the labour, plant, materials and subcontractor components on the contract.
    • prepare and issue supplier (materials) and sub-contract enquiries and adjudication of quotes upon receipt
    • prepare and assist with supplier documents and agreements when necessary to address contractual issues such as quote validity, escalation, rise and fall, delivery period, quality, measurement , payment terms etc.
    • prepare and assist with subcontract documents and agreements
    • agree and certify sub-contractors valuations for payment
    • verify and approve for payment invoices received
    • attend to subcontractor and supplier issues/claims/variations professionally and promptly
    • assisting the Construction (Site) Manager with the preparation and submission of the Daily Site Diary and Field Engineering Queries. (FEQ’s)
    • prompt and timeous attention to, compilation, pricing and submission as necessary of all Site Instruction & Variation Order
    • continuous and timely updating of the project/contract on CCS Candy and integration with Buildsmart
  • Contract law and Claims ;
    • Knowledge and understanding of the applicable General Conditions of Contract as well as the contract specific specification so as to be able to correctly assess the contractual implication of events, circumstances and conditions encountered on site, and thereafter assist the Construction (Site) Manager with the timeous preparation and submission of any necessary contractual responses thereto, including a well formulated and drafted claim.
  • Quantities Measurement and Monthly Certification
    • Timely submission of progress claims for work done, as well as the compilation of Final Estimates to proactively monitor the approved contract value
    • Preparation of cashflows relating to the construction program
  • Cost Control & Reporting ‘
    • monthly reconciliation of Actual versus Allowable quantity and costs such that prompt remedial action may be taken to address problems and mitigate losses.
  • Tender Pricing ;
    • Assist the Estimating Department and Contracts Managers / Directors when necessary with tender pricing and preparation, including quantities take off from tender drawings to cross check billed quantities
    • this forms part of a longer term development goal pricing tenders to assist in the procurement of future work.
  • Client development and long term relationship building within the industry.
